Nobody expected it to happen, but a 25-year-old goalkeeper died unexpectedly after saving a penalty for his club.
Arne Espeel, a Belgian goalkeeper, died shortly after saving a penalty for his club Winkel Sport B. He collapsed on the grass shortly after the dave against SK Westrozebeke and showed no vital signs.
Desperate teammates and players rushed to give him first aid, and emergency services arrived and treated him with a defibrillator. They were unable to save him, and he died in the hospital.
“Arne has played for us since he was a kid, and everybody really liked him,” the club said in a statement.
“It’s difficult to comprehend how something like this could have happened to someone so young. He had previously been a perfectly healthy young man.”
He is thought to have collapsed after quickly getting back to his feet and celebrating. The seventh-tier match was then abruptly canceled. The cause of death is unknown at this time, but an autopsy is reportedly scheduled for February 13.
Chelsea Are Keen On Signing New Goalkeeper This Season
Stefaan Dewerchin, assistant coach at Winkel Sport, stated:
“The ball remained in play. Our goalkeeper rose as quickly as he could to catch the ball, but then collapsed. It was heartbreaking to witness.”
Patrick Rotsaert, the club’s sporting director, added:
“We are saddened by this incident in the world of sports. And it’s been said that he was adored by the club’s fans. It’s difficult to believe that the goalkeeper has left.”
