Man United’s striker, Cristiano Ronaldo returned for pre-season duty after arriving later than expected, citing family obligations as the reason for his unexpected absence.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has returned to Carrington in recent weeks for talks about his future and a return to training.

There is still much speculation about where Ronaldo will play next season, but as of Sunday afternoon, he was back in the Manchester United Jersey. The Red Devils hosted Rayo Vallecano just 24 hours after a stronger United side faced Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

Manchester United eventually failed to score a winning goal and were held to a 1-1 draw by the Spanish team. The main talking point, however, was Ronaldo’s performance and then premature exit from the stadium.

Days before the game, the 37-year-old teased his appearance on Instagram, writing,

“Sunday, the king plays.”

Given this, Ronaldo underwhelmed and failed to deliver the kind of performance that would have justified his pre-match “king” declaration

Ronaldo was benched at halftime in his first game under new manager Erik ten Hag after making little impact on the game.

To add insult to injury, Ronaldo’s replacement Amad scored United’s first goal while the iconic number seven was still in the locker room.

He was seen leaving Old Trafford before the end of the game with Diogo Dalot, who was not part of the squad on the day, heading towards the stadium car park after being taken off.

He did, however, find time to comment on the game. Ronaldo took to Twitter with an image of himself in action, writing,

Happy to be back.”
