Josko Gvardiol hinted that he and Mateo Kovacic might one day play together at Chelsea after Croatia advanced to the World Cup semifinals in 2022.
Gvardiol’s meteoric rise continued as he assisted his team to a goalless draw against Belgium, allowing Croatia to advance as Group F runners-up at the expense of their opponents.
The RB Leipzig defender made an incredible last-second tackle to stop Romelu Lukaku, revealing why Chelsea, among other clubs, are interested in signing the 20-year-old.
The Blues were Gvardiol’s main suitor, but they failed to sign him during the summer transfer window. A fellow Croatian, Kovacic, described him as “phenomenal.”
Gvardiol signed a new contract with Leipzig after turning down a €90 million offer from Chelsea during the summer, but the Premier League club is still said to be interested in signing the Croatian player the following year.
Gvardiol’s Leipzig colleague Christopher Nkunku is rumored to be under contract with Chelsea to join them next summer for around €60 million.
What did Gvardiol think of the Chelsea connections?
“How about Chelsea and me?” I’m not certain. You are aware of what occurred recently. “To be honest, I’m not sure,” Gvardiol admitted to The Athletic.
Of course, it’s a big club, and who knows what might happen? Perhaps I’ll be there one day. It’s fantastic to see moments like this, especially since Kovacic is present and you never know. I speak with him.
“My agency is looking into it, and we’ll see,” he added. I’m content in Leipzig right now. We’ll have to wait and see; you never know what might happen. You’re aware of the stories and other details, but all I can say is that Leipzig makes me happy, and for the time being, I intend to stay and perform for them.
Even being present at this major event means a lot to me at the age of 20, so I’m happy. That is something I need to think about.
